ARCHAEOLOGY EDUCATION
Public Archaeology can stimulate an interest in history while promoting an awareness that cultural resources have significance in the present. New College Public Archaeology Lab is committed to preserving regional heritage.
FLORIDA ANTHROPOLOGY
Founded in 1947, the Florida Anthropological Society (FAS) provides a formal means by which individuals interested in anthropological and archaeological studies in the State of Florida may come together through special events, chapter meetings, speaker presentations, public education programs, and the Society’s professional publications.
FLORIDA DIVISION OF HISTORICAL RESOURCES
The mission of the Florida Division of Historical Resources is to inspire a love of history through preservation and education. FDHR works to identify, document, protect, preserve, interpret and promote Florida's historical, archaeological, and folklife resources; nurture an understanding of Florida's diverse cultural fabric; and promote Florida's role in regional, national, and international history. They cultivate connections between people and place by encouraging engagement and curiosity about our state's rich cultural history.
TRIBAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION
The Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) is charged with preserving, documenting, and promoting the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s cultural heritage, both on and off the modern reservation boundaries. To ensure the protection of significant historic and archaeological sites, traditional cultural properties, and important buildings and structures, the THPO staff uses the highest standards and culturally appropriate methodologies to safeguard these areas. The preservation of these sites will help promote the rich heritage of the Tribe for generations to come.
HERITAGE MONITORING SCOUTS
Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida) is a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk, particularly those impacted by climate change in the form of erosion and sea level rise. The public is encouraged to apply to the program and will receive monthly updates on training and resources available for HMS Florida participants statewide. Citizens sign up as Heritage Monitoring Scouts, and begin monitoring Historic Cemeteries, Historic Structures, and Archaeological Sites.
PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY
The Florida Public Archaeology Network's mission is to promote and facilitate the conservation, study and public understanding of Florida's archaeological heritage through educational programs at regional centers throughout the state.
SARASOTA COUNTY
Sarasota County Historical Resources collects, preserves, and protects Sarasota county's history. It has a county archaeologist and collections curator.
MANATEE COUNTY
Manatee County protects its historical resources in order to preserve the cultural, architectural and archaeological history, and to provide public education of those resources.
